Renaissance Zones
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has created three targeted industries being Forest Products Processing, Agricultural Processing, and Renewable Energy for the establishment of “tax free” Renaissance Zones to promote and enhance those industries. Taxes that facilities located in a renaissance zone do not pay are Michigan Business Tax (MBT), state education tax, personal and real property taxes, and local income tax where applicable. Taxes still due are those mandated by the federal government, local bond obligations, school sinking fund or special assessments. Companies are not exempt from paying the MBT, sales and use tax.
St. Clair County Project Utilizing Renissance Incentive:
Marysville Ethanol, LCC
Marysville Ethanol, a private partnership of investors and Michigan energy companies, constructed a $95 Million fuel ethanol plant on a portion of the site owned by Marysville Hydrocarbons, Inc. in Marysville, Michigan. The ethanol produced at the plant will be used as an additive to gasoline, reducing not only our reliance on imported gasoline, but greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles as well.
The EDA coordinated an incentive package along with the City of Marysville and the MEDC which helped the company reach their decision to build the ethanol facility in Marysville, Michigan. The company received bulk water/sewer discount rates, local tax abatements and the establishment of an Agricultural Renaissance Zone.
An agricultural Renaissance Zone was established through the State of Michigan for a variety of state and local tax relief benefits.
